Found some 55 gallon plastic barrels on Craigslist for a great price! 6 barrels @ $25 a piece. I’m looking to do some projects like the wicking/air pruning project below…some rain barrels and I don’t know what else….maybe giving 2 away to a family member.
Anyone with some experience on cleaning these type barrels out (with only 2 holes), let me know! š
If you have any other cool projects, let me know!

We purchased plans for an aquaponics system (a synergistic system of using fish waste to fertilize plants, which clean the water with the fish waste and send the clean water back to the fish) which was built using 3-55 gallon drums. A great step toward self sufficiency.
Awesome Karen! Do you have any pics of your system? Where did you purchase the plans?
Peace,
Todd
So when using an aquaponics system, how do you get the minerals from the soil/earth into your plants? I know plants appreciate the fish waste, but the minerals etc from the earth are needed as well, not just for the plants but we, who eat them too.
Deez,
I don’t do aquaponics. But there is a huge file that you can download that will give you a lot of info. on aquaponics. Here is the link – https://www.edthatmatters.com/free-aquaponics-information-a-gold-mine/

We are completely off grid at our other place and I used two barrels and some field line to make a septic system for my travel trailer in the country. I pull the handle to drain the black water followed by the brown water (seperate tanks) to ensure clean pipes. It has worked well so far and could extend the system if necessary. We also sanitized one barrel and haul water with it. It siphons right into the storage tank from the truck and we have plenty for the fire pit when we leave.
